Reviewing and selecting outcome measures for use in routine practice.M. P. H. Joanne Greenhalgh BSc, Andrew F. Long Ba Msc Mphil, Alison J. Brettle B. A. MSc & B. A. Maria J. Grant - 1998 - Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice 4 (4):339-350.
For the successful achievement of evidence-based practice, clinicians, managers and purchasers need evidence on whether a particular intervention works and ways to judge the appropriateness of the outcome criteria and measures used. Guidance is needed on what outcome measure to use, especially within routine clinical care settings. Beginning with a re-clarification of the difference between a health status and an outcome measure, the paper presents an evaluative checklist for use by clinical audit and research staff to review outcome measures for (...)

Concurrent Movement Impairs Incidental But Not Intentional Statistical Learning.David J. Stevens, Joanne Arciuli & David I. Anderson - 2015 - Cognitive Science 39 (5):1081-1098.
The effect of concurrent movement on incidental versus intentional statistical learning was examined in two experiments. In Experiment 1, participants learned the statistical regularities embedded within familiarization stimuli implicitly, whereas in Experiment 2 they were made aware of the embedded regularities and were instructed explicitly to learn these regularities. Experiment 1 demonstrated that while the control group were able to learn the statistical regularities, the resistance-free cycling group and the exercise group did not demonstrate learning. This is in contrast with (...)

fusion theory challenges efforts to see theory as inhibiting by presenting an approach that is innovative, eclectic, and subtle in order to draw out competing and constellating ideas and opinions. This collected volume of essays examines fusion theory and demonstrates how the theory can be applied to the reading of various works of Indian English novelists.

Feminist Interpretations of Thomas Hobbes.Nancy J. Hirschmann & Joanne Harriet Wright (eds.) - 2012 - Pennsylvania State University Press.
_Feminist Interpretations of Thomas Hobbes _features the work of feminist scholars who are centrally engaged with Hobbes’s ideas and texts and who view Hobbes as an important touchstone in modern political thought. Bringing together scholars from the disciplines of philosophy, history, political theory, and English literature who embrace diverse theoretical and philosophical approaches and a range of feminist perspectives, this interdisciplinary collection aims to appeal to an audience of Hobbes scholars and nonspecialists alike. As a theorist whose trademark is a (...)

Fundamentalism, Multiculturalism and Problems of Conducting Research with Populations in Developing Nations.Nancy J. Crigger, Lygia Holcomb & Joanne Weiss - 2001 - Nursing Ethics 8 (5):459-468.
A growing number of nurse researchers travel globally to conduct research in poor and underserved populations in developing nations. These researchers, while well versed in research ethics, often find it difficult to apply traditional ethical standards to populations in developing countries. The problem of applying ethical standards across cultures is explained by a long-standing debate about the nature of ethical principles. Fundamentalism is the philosophical stance that ethical principles are universal, while the anthropologically-based ‘multicultural’ model claims the philosophical position that (...)

    The “Good Planning Panel”.Thomas J. Smith & Joann N. Bodurtha - 2013 - Hastings Center Report 43 (4):30-32.
In “Avoiding a Death Panel Redux,” Nicole Piemonte and Laura Hermer make the argument that the advance care planning consultation provision during the health care reform debate collapsed both because the language in the provision was deliberately misread and because some features of the language could in fact be misleading. We agree on both counts. We add that the cost‐effectiveness provisions of the bill make us face difficult decisions we as a nation would rather avoid, but can and must face (...)

Statistical Learning Is Not Affected by a Prior Bout of Physical Exercise.David J. Stevens, Joanne Arciuli & David I. Anderson - 2016 - Cognitive Science 40 (4):1007-1018.
This study examined the effect of a prior bout of exercise on implicit cognition. Specifically, we examined whether a prior bout of moderate intensity exercise affected performance on a statistical learning task in healthy adults. A total of 42 participants were allocated to one of three conditions—a control group, a group that exercised for 15 min prior to the statistical learning task, and a group that exercised for 30 min prior to the statistical learning task. The participants in the exercise (...)

On possibilities for action: The past, present and future of affordance research.Gert-Jan Pepping, Joanne Smith, Frank T. J. M. Zaal & Annemiek D. Barsingerhorn - 2012 - Avant: Trends in Interdisciplinary Studies 3 (2):54-69.
We give a historical overview of the development of almost 50 years of empirical research on the affordances in the past and in the present. Defined by James Jerome Gibson in the early development of the Ecological Approach to Perception and Action as the prime of perception and action, affordances have become a rich topic of investigation in the fields of human movement science and experimental psychology. The methodological origins of the empirical research performed on affordances can be traced back (...)
